I see teaching and learning as an ancestral inheritance. My great grandmother was a one room schoolteacher in post emancipatory Georgia who taught many children. One of my great grandmother’s students was my grandmother who, in turn, taught me to read.
My commitment to continuously developing my pedagogy is therefore not only in conversation with the history of my family, but with the history of public schooling in the United States as originating in southern Black towns. As a scholar who is committed to the question of how we might sustain Black Life, I look to the histories of how this work was done before. My teaching has spanned K-12 informal computing spaces and higher education spaces at the intersections of Technology, Race, and Learning. Over time, I have developed my pedagogy to have three clear aims: 1) to translate big ideas into accessible concepts, 2) to give effective and attentive feedback to students, and 3) to connect with students’ visions for the future and support them in their thinking to achieve it.
